Subject: [*] "undigest" for Unix mail
This perl script runs on Unix systems. It is useful for parsing
digest email. For example, from inside elm (the Unix mail program)
simply pipe a message thru "undigest".
"Undigest" will break all the messages inside the digest into
individual messages and display them. It does not alter the original
message, it makes a copy.
I did not write this, I just use it.
I guess this should show up in the Unix dir.

Subject: [*] BBEdit 2.5.2->2.5.3 Updater
The recently released 2.5.2 maintenance version of BBEdit has a bug in
it which renders it incapable of working with THINK C projects for
browsing and searching. This bug was the result of a source-management
problem (i.e. a screwup on my part) when creating the shipping build.
The bug is nondestructive; BBEdit will not crash due to it, and no
data will be lost or corrupted.
The symptoms are that garbage is displayed in the project browser
window when opening a file, and attempts to search THINK C projects
will result in numerous file system error messages.
This bug does not affect any other part of BBEdit's functionality, and
specifically does not affect BBEdit's ability to function as the
external editor for THINK C/Symantec C++ 6.0.
If you have previously updated your 2.5 or 2.5.1 version to 2.5.2,
the attached updater will turn your 2.5.2 version into 2.5.3.
If you recently received a finished-goods BBEdit package with 2.5.2 on
the distribution disk, we will automatically send you an updater disk,
and it should arrive by the end of next week (at the latest). You can
make use of the attached updater if you don't wish to wait for the
floppy to arrive.
This updater is also available immediately for anonymous FTP from
world.std.com, in /ftp/pub/bbedit.
We at Bare-Bones Software regret any inconvenience this bug may have
caused, and we appreciate your continued support and consideration.

Font Clerk is a font reporting/conversion utility. It contains several report
formats for things such as point sizes, key sequences for special characters,
sample text, and full character sets. You may select one or many fonts at once
for reporting purposes. In addition to reports, Font Clerk provides you with
improtant information about the fonts installed in your system. You can easily
find out whether any given font is monospaces or proportional. You may also
find which fonts are TrueType, Type I and screen fonts.
Font Clerk allows you to convert between Macintosh and Windows TrueType font
formats. Conversion both ways is supported. You may also create empty
suitcases
for organizing your fonts.
I have attempted to listen to everyone who has sent suggestions to me. Many of
these suggestions have been implemented in this version. I feel this version
is
more robust and solid than previous versions.
New features
-----------------------------------------
[1] TrueType conversion works both ways
[2] Completely rewritten print code with new Report Generator dialog
[3] New report formats
[4] Allows one font or font suitcase to be opened and added to the installed
font list
[5] Improved TrueType handling
[6] Online help
[7] Character set report can be printed in a range of point sizes
[8] Character set window allows you to find a key sequence for any desired
character
[9] View Font window allows you to view any font in a range of point sizes and
styles
[10] New display tells you is a font is monospaced or proportional
[11] Improved speed in most functions
Bug Fixes
-------------
[1] All known printing bugs have been fixed
[2] No more crashes on certain models when running applications in background
Font Clerk will run on any Macintosh running system 6.05 or later. It supports
all monitor sizes in both color and black & white.
Administrator: Please remove Font Clerk 4.1 and replace it with this version.

Subject: [*] MacHistory.sit.hqx (Excellent Mac Chart)
Welcome to the latest Mac History, version 10/93. In an attempt to make
some sense out of its current computer line, Apple has launched 14 new
products to add to its line and our confusion. The Performa line will
remain with its mass market customers, all LC's will eventually be drawn
back to the Education channels, and the Quadra line will be the products
you will find at your local retailer. It sounds so simple, but without a
scorecard (MacHistory) it might be easy to lose track of whats out there,
and where Macs have been.
Once again, I have constructed the chart in the Times font only and in
PICT format (done in Deneba'a UltraPaint), so most everyone will have it
at their disposal. I have also found the secret to making the chart
consume less memory, so most graphic programs will open it up with a
couple of megs of memory. If you are in a low-memory configuration, you
will find Teach Text to work very well. To print with Teach Text, make
sure that you print it at about 95% its actual size (Teach Text will make
the chart to big because of the way it handles graphics). If you have a
laser with the capability of selecting "graphics smoothing" (Apple lasers
in the page setup dialog box), use it, as the graphics will lose their bit
mapped look and turn out pretty nice. Both a black and white
(LaserHistory) and color (ColorHistory) version have been provided. Each
is divided into two parts.
Please remember what the original intent of this chart was to help inform
those that had questions about how different Macs compared. I think I
still retain that quality of performance comparisons, while giving a
historic sense (timeline if you will) of the Mac universe. If you pass
this chart around electronically, please retain this Read Me document with
it so others will have the same benefits as you in knowing how to print
Mac History. If you have questions or would like to comment about Mac
History, you can reach me at the following mailboxes...

Subject: [*] MoneySaverDemo.cpt
The attached CompactPro archive contains a demo version of the
Money Saver software by The Banker's Secret - a package
designed to help you understand debt management and
dramatically reduce the cost of your mortgage and other loans.
This demo version will show you the beginnings of how to save
thousands, by using your "pocket change" to pay off your
debts. For example, just $25 a month will save you $25,000 on
today's typical $100,000 mortgage.
This demo version gives potential users the ability to
evaluate the fully functioning software's capabilities -
which includes functions to see how much money you can save on
your adjustable, fixed rate, and bi-weekly mortgages as well as
student, business and many car loans. It can also answer your
important "What if?" questions. For example, how much will I
save with a $25 pre-payment? With $50? You'll find it
invaluable when shopping for a loan or considering
refinancing.

Subject: [*] morsetrainer-US-11.sit.Hqx
MorseTrainer US-1.1
REPLACES ALL EARLIER VERSIONS
Packed with BinHex and StuffIt Lite
This is a major new-features and bug-fix release:
New features in 1.1
* Enhanced sound generator, volume control and risetime control.
The pitch is set in steps of 10Hz instead of using MIDI frequencies.
* Speed and tempo limits increased to 80 words/minute as a
result of the enhanced sound generator.
* User-selectable font in the Misc settings dialog.
Bugs fixed in 1.1
* Better signal timing. In earlier versions of MorseTrainer the tempo
selected was not equal to the actual tempo if the tempo and speed
were different. However, even if the timing is very exact now you
may still encounter the problem, especially on smaller computers
such as Mac Plus, SE, Classic etc. These computers cannot handle
sequencies of short sounds properly.
>>> If the timing error is more than 5% the user will be notified.
If the timing error is smaller than 5% and you still want to be notified,
hold down the option key at the end of a signalling session.
Known problems in 1.1
* The sound volume control is not supported by Apple on all machine
and system configurations.
Notes for 1.1
* When a library is opened by MorseTrainer US-1.1 it will be converted
to a new format automatically. Thereafter, the library cannot be opened
succesfully with an older version of MorseTrainer.
General info for 1.1
MorseTrainer is a powerful tool for learning and training Morse code.
Features
* Three different training modes: user text, random text, library text
* Arbitrary signal volume, pitch, waveform and risetime
* Arbitrary speed and tempo
* Multi-alphabet support
* Random text generator
* Text library editor
* On-line alphabet
* On-line manual
* Help Balloons
* And a lot more!
And of course, it's FREEWARE!

Assembled and tested by Scott Gruby (Scott_Gruby@hmc.edu)
Source code by Peter N Lewis
NotifyMail is a background only application that listens for a telnet
connection to port 1035. When it receives the connection, it sends an
AppleEvent to Eudora to check your mail. The end result (when coupled with
a .forward file on your UNIX machine) is that you will almost immediately
receive your electronic mail when it arrives on your UNIX machine. You no
longer have to tell Eudora to check your mail every X minutes.
This requires Eudora 1.4 or higher and MacTCP 1.1 or higher. Look at the
Readme file for installation instructions.

Howdy all --
I'm looking for a couple of Powerbook utilities that will perform
the following functions:
- Spool print jobs to disk when documents are printed while on the road
- Check for the dock every time the Powerbook is started up and, if docked,
set the Network control panel to use Ethernet
The key word here is *automatically* ... I know that it's not too tough to
print Postscript to disk and send it later with Widgets or SendPS, or to
manually launch the Network CP every boot ... but this isn't for me, it's
for someone who wants to do as little manual tinkering as possible.
Please respond directly to me and I'll summarize for the net.
Many thanks!

Subject: 13 inch color monitor not always required
Here is a tip for Macintosh users that do not have a 13 inch or larger
color monitor, but want to use software that requires this monitor (at least,
according to their specifications).
I found out that many of these applications will work on the 1-bit monochrome
screen of my Powerbook 170, but that a part of the screen is not displayed
because a powerbook screen is only 400 pixels high, and a 13 inch monitor
displays 480 pixels. This is especially a problem when buttons and other
controls are located in this missing area.
Ok, here is the solution: install the DragAnyWindow control panel (written
by Alessandro Levi Montalcini). Now you can drag any window, and make the
80-pixel high missing part of the window visible by dragging upwards. Most
software will repaint the reappearing bottom part after the drag operation
correctly.
Using this method, I was able to use software on CD-ROMs from MacWorld and
Sumeria (like MacWorld interactive, "From Alice to ocean", and "Space: A
Visual History of Manned Spaceflight").
Note: this is not a guaranteed solution for all applications, but if you
have some software which you cannot use because your screen is to small,
try it with the DragAnyWindow control panel.

Subject: [Q] CD-ROM problems
Perhaps this question should be suffixed
``The Perils of Buying Cheap!'' but here
goes...
On a recent trip to the States I was so
tempted by the price on an Apple CD-ROM
at Frys that I bought it and shipped it
back to the UK. All is sadly not well.
First, the packaging, manuals, etc were
all labelled Apple but the drive is not,
it's actually labelled Sony! Second, the
drive registers on the SCSI bus as:
4 CD-ROM CDU-542 Sony 2.6a
while a friends CD-ROM 300 shows up as
4 CD-ROM CDU-800 Sony 1.9a
The drive stubbornly refuses to function
in a way that suggests that it's a driver
problem rather than an electrical one.
Frys are no help at all and I'm having little
joy with local dealers. Does anyone have any
bright ideas that might help?
Direct mail to henryb@sco.com would be much
appreciated and I'll summarise any solution.

not under the quicktime directory. Would it be too much trouble to ask people
posting non PICT files into sumex-aim to add a _GIF, _TIFF, _FreeH
_JPEG, or _QTIME
extension to those file names? If this was required, maybe the moderators
would be able to file the pictures correctly. Also this way the user who
accesses sumex-aim through gopher doesn't have to download megabytes of files
before realizing they (the user) doesn't have the necessary software to open
the programs.
Just an idea.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Subject: Aliens - Oh Fortuna QuickTime movie available
Back in Nov '92, I put together a QuickTime movie to celebrate my purchase of
a special edition laserdisc of one of my favorite sci-fi films, _Aliens_.
It's composed of fast, shoot'em up, Marines vs. Aliens, fighting sequences
>From the movie with audio from Apotheosis' techno rendition of Orff's
"Oh Fortuna". A small version (1/4 the frame size, lower video quality,
mono soundtrack) made a very brief appearance here at sumex. I've always
wanted to distribute the original, larger, higher quality movie, and now with
my netcom account, I have my chance.
The movie "Aliens - Oh Fortuna" is now available via anonymous ftp from
netcom [* see below] in the directory /pub/jaimev. It will be here
*temporarily* until Friday, Nov 5. (If some kind soul out there can make
it available somewhere else after this date, it will be highly appreciated)
The movie's frame size is 304x168; it has stereo 8-bit, 22Khz audio tracks,
plays at 12fps, uses Cinepak video compression at quality = 3.00. Total
running length is 1 min 42 sec. The movie is not only big (about 15 Mb) but
it probably needs a fast machine to keep up with the playback data rate.
It looks best on a 16 or 24-bit deep monitor; if you don't like the
dithering effects of the Cinepak video compression when viewed on a 8-bit
monitor, try watching the movie in 8-bit grey scale.
Because of some people's problems with the MacBinary format of the Post-It
Notes QT movie that was previously at this location, I'm encoding this
movie as 11 separate binhex files. De-binhexing each file will produce a
Stuffit segment file (the size of a high density disk). Use Stuffit Lite to
join all 11 segments into a single QT movie file. Enjoy.

No, this is probably related to allocation blocks. Try this, select some
of the files while Finder is active and use the File-Get Info command.
This should indicate a number such as xxK (YY bytes used). The bytes used
number is the actual size of the file's contents while the xx K number
indicates how much space is being used. You may be able to surmise
the size of the allocation blocks from this. Certainly a very small text
file be the size of one allocation block. In other words, if it says 37
bytes used, 2K on disk, the allocation block is 2 K.

Subject: Apple 13" Monitor Woes (Q)
The most common failure with the Apple 13" monitor, causing it to appear
to shut down (screen blanks, green power led goes off), is the "high
voltage resistor" or high voltage block located in series between the
flyback transformer and the CRT. This problem is so common that Apple has
an extended service program that will fix your monitor for free if it
falls into a certain date range (sometimes the date code on the defective
part is what counts).
We usually find that there are also dozens to over a hundred cracked
solder joints in these displays, some of which can cause the same symptom.

Okay, I have heard all sorts of lousy things about Apple's 8-24 GC card, and

I thoug it might be prudent to ask for advice and information about another
Apple card before doing anything...
I use a IIci with a 128k cache card, running System 7.1 and a host of various
Extentions and Control panels...I have 8 megs of RAM, and honestly, I'd like
to squeeze the most out of it without paying for 2 or 4 meg SIMMs. Seeing as
the IIci built in video is a) slightly slower than a regular video card, and
b) takes up some of my RAM, I was very interested in ads for old Apple 8-bit
color cards. They're very cheap (not much over $50 in the back of MacWorld)
and I thought it might be a good way to get a lsight speedup and get more of
my RAM back.
Any thoughts on this idea?

I had a similar problem with TeachText--I raised the allotted memory in

Of course, this is just in TeachText, but I'm pretty sure it will work
in other programs as well. So increasing the memory size in the Get

thought the search command didn't work as it should and I therefore made

After that when opening the "Define fields" dialog I get strange empty
lines with no field name but the equation intact.
When clicking on one of them the fields name flickers for a short

When clicking on another empty line I get the dialog telling me that the

When pressing Resume the dialog just disappears nothing else happens.
I have done a few more recovers but nothing seems to work.

This may be the dumbest request I've made of y'all (and I've made some
winners), but do any of you know a source for what I call floppy condoms,
those glassine envelopes into which 3.5" floppies fit and via which the
disks are marginally more protected from crud in pockets and purse?
In olden days, when last I bought floppies, even MEI/Micro's bulk disks
came with condoms so we could all practice safe computing. After Leslye
and I switched from disk to tape backup, we had a bunch of floppies, more
than we've used by a long shot. No problem at home.
At the office we've been buying whatever General Stores has. The latest
several batches had what could best be described as half-height sleeves.
Dare I call them stubbies? Probably not. Anyhoo, the things are useless.
Fall off in pocket and/or purse.
Worse than stubbie sleeves (Oh right. I said I wouldn't dare call them
that), the HD disks from General Stores are foul. At best I get two per
box that won't format. The Intel-inside pukes (no offense) saw similar
formatting problems. So I ordered Mac/Duplicator-grade from MEI/Micro
this month. Cheaper, better, and no-nonsense return of deaders forever.
But the MEI/Micro disks arrived unsleeved. Oh naughtyword. I can't keep
recycling sleeves forever. Or for very long. The ones I have are already
slitting along the sides.
And I haven't seen 3.5" disk sleeves in any of the multitude of catalogs
I have. Can any of y'all point me to a source for those floppy condoms?
I'd very much appreciate it.

Subject: Get Info Problems (Suggestion)
I too have had this problem, whereby I cannot do a Get Info
on either my Hard Drive or my Wastebasket. Everything else
is fine, however. This problem has only been apparent the last
couple of weeks, during which period I installed the newer
version of the ubiquitious SpeedyFinder7 (see Info-Macs passim).
Being very suspicious of this control panel, mainly due to past
experience and also due to the recent warnings on Info-Mac (q.v.),
I had a go at playing around with the settings, and doing lots
of restarts.
Eventually, the problem appeared to be with the alias resolving
option. If this section of the "cool options" (I think) is turned
off, then this problem disappears. When on, it comes back. Simple
as that. Maybe this only happens in combination with some other
extensions - I didn't check it *that* extensively. But, basically,
try turning that option off and see if the problem goes away.
Another problem I found in the past with (possibly only an older
version of) SF7 was that if the option to add cmd-Q quit option
to the finder's File menu was added, then this made all warning
boxes appear in the top left corner of the screen, so that they
were unreadable.
I think that SpeedyFinder7 has a lot of invaluable things which
I enjoy having the functionality of. It's just a pity it's a bit
crap at doing some of them.

Subject: Greater access to ftp sites
Hello,
Since there have been several postings lately from people having trouble
getting into the info-mac archive via ftp and gopher, I thought it would be
helpful to repost this message explaining how to get files from the archive
via email. I have found this to be an invaluable resource since the
current archive traffic makes it nearly impossible to get in via ftp or
gopher anymore. I also think that this provides a fairer means of access
since the requests get queued on a first come first served basis unlike the
rather random chance nature of gopher connection requests.
If you are using Eudora, PopMail, or some other pop email program,
receiving files via email is as easy as with ftp or gopher. Since the
Info-mac digests and WAIS server (info-mac.src) provide the pathname of
files at the bottom, you basically just need to copy and paste the path
into a message to LISTSERV@ricevm1.rice.edu after $MACARCH GET , send it,
and you're all set! Even for those on unix or VMS mail editors that have
the additional steps of extracting the file, downloading it, and
unbinhexing it, this is still a fairly easy way to get files, especially if
you can't get them via ftp or gopher. I've found that the files generally
come back in a matter of minutes unless the server is really swamped.
Hope that helps.

Hello to all of you,
As everyone knows, when we starts a Mac with a disc in the disk drive, the Mac

on the hard drive. Is there a way, by software or hardware, to reverse that
process? I mean a Mac so equipped, would first try to find a valid system on

Why you may ask? Our Macs hard disk are well protected but some clever

********** HOW TO CONTROL/SET THE SIZE OF A FOLDER ? ***********
Hallo,
Does someone know a way of controlling -or better- setting the maximum
size of diskspace used by a network user (we use AppleShare 3.0.1 here).
In our network there are running two volumes. On one volume everybody
can store his/here data in his/here own folder, so it can be backed up.
But the problem is that some users (a minority) seem to think, that
the WHOLE volume is theirs.
In my opinion this cannot be only our problem. AppleShare does not have
the capability to manage this.
Maybe someone out there has a solution ? (other than partioning the
whole server, because this would be a very chaotic solution, given
the number of users).

Subject: Landscape Design Packages?
A friend of mine is a professional landscape designer, and could be in the
market for a CAD package. She looked into possibilities some 3 or more years
ago, and went to several demonstations etc. She was not impressed! She thought
that the packages (of yore!) were inflexible, clunky and too damned
expensive.
I also have the impression that what she saw were PeeCee based products.
I know little about CAD packages beyond the few reviews I have read over the
past several years, and even less about Landscape design CAD packages, which
I do not recall seeing any reviews about. My overwhelming impression arising
out of these reviews was that most if not all of the packages were ported from
the PeeCee world, and that the largely retained command line interfaces
clearly demonstrated their antecedents. The last review that I made any real
attention to was at least a year ago, so I am undoubtedly out of date.
I and my friend would be deeply grateful of any up to date information,
referrals to reviews, anecdotal *evidence*, etc.
By the way, I have recently heard of, but know nothing about, one such
package: LANDCADD.
TIA and Cheers.

You can think of MacTCP as a translator for your Mac that enables
it to talk TCP, the language of the Internet, just as the Mac currently
speaks AppleTalk.
It is for individual Macs that have access to the Internet, either
via a connected network or via a modem using SLIP or PPP.
MacTCP is commercial, and costs between $52 and $59, depending on
whether you order from MacWarehouse or Apple. You can also get it
with my book, The Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh (available in
bookstores, for direct ordering info email tisk@tidbits.com), which
costs under $30. Version 2.0.2 comes with the book, and you can get
an updater to 2.0.4 from seeding.apple.com or from ftp.tidbits.com.
> Is there any other program out there that I can use to FTP directly to my
Mac
> without MacTCP or any other external program/device?
Nope, not that I know of. To FTP directly to your Mac, it has to be
on the Internet, and the only way to accomplish that is via MacTCP.

Subject: MicroPhone II
I am having a problem downloading text files from my VAX account to my Mac
using MicroPhone II 4.0. The files look okay when I type them in my account,
but when I send them with Zmodem and view them in a text viewer, they have
line feed characters instead of end-of-line characters, which results in
unusable text files (I have to run everything through SaintEdit to convert
them
to Mac text)
Why does Zmodem in Microphone do this? I was using Zterm with Zmodem before
and
did not experience this problem. Also, Kermit works fine but it is too slow.
Do I need to set the text file parameters somewhere to instruct MicroPhone to
save the files as Mac-readable?

Obviously not at all. :-) Seriously folks, this is the sort of
little thing that makes a volunteer's life a bit brighter -
small public acknowledgements that they're doing a good job and
performing a public service. I think in some ways the small
things like thanking the moderators for doing something that
they would do anyway are more important than letters
specifically indicating how useful they are.
The more I get into the Internet, the more I'm amazed at what
does get done despite the fact that essentially no one can even
pretend that it's part of his or her job.

No. The standard Mac character set handles all Western European

The copy protection would only be invoked for scripts other than
Roman. The previous poster whould have said "Roman" when he used
"english".
Note that I think Nisus's goose will be cooked by WordPerfect's
competitive upgrade, which lets users of any other word processing

has no copy protection and costs much less, the choice seems clear.

My question, then: If the 1 gig drive were to be partitioned into a 300

volumes, or just the smaller 300mb one?

I've been able to get NCSA/BYU Telnet 2.5 to display Tektronix graphics.
I don't know how it worked, though. I was able to get a Tek graphic out

You may want to try fooling with config.tel. Make sure you have

Subject: There's gotta be a better way...
OK, I didn't want to write this and thereby publish my ignorance--I was
hoping to learn from months of reading, or else that someone else would
ask. But I'm still in the dark. Okay...
I want a Mac program through which I can dial up the school's IBM-VM
through my modem, and, from there, send & receive email and retrieve
files from elsewhere, and download them over the modem to my Mac. I
currently use Kermit for that purpose but the interface is lousy. I
have used Fetch and I like the Mac-like interface, but Fetch doesn't
seem designed to work through a modem. I know that the few campus
Macs that are networked and have Fetch on them utilize MacTCP, but I
presume that I do NOT want MacTCP on my little home Mac, right? I mean,
my email address is FREE to me as a student, and it is located at the
school's VM machine (dinosaur that it is). MacTCP is for when you want
your own Mac to have its OWN independent electronic address, right?
I've been stuck in a world of command-lines and opaque interfaces for
all my ftp'ing from sumex and wuarchive and elsewhere--
* Anything other than text.hqx files are such a miserable headache
that I just wait until I can get to school and use Fetch. Trying
to figure out what to write on the damn ====> prompt line to tell
the machine how to get a .bin file, and then using Kermit to down-
load the results is more than I'm up to. I don't want to HAVE to
know how to tell "ftp" that the wuarchive file is a MacBinary II
(not that I know how to tell it that anyway)--I want it to notice
that itself (with some help from the interface program) and bring
it home and download it (if I so desire) through the modem to my
Mac in the proper form. Like Fetch does.
* Reading and replying to mail is no thrill either. Can't copy and
paste more than a single line from someone else's posting because
the VM interprets the end-of-line signals in the mail messages as
Returns, and obediently tries to put all subsequent lines on the
command line, like this:
====> Returns, and obediently tries to put all subsequent lines on
...and then proceeds to tell me that it doesn't understand that
command. And if I want to download my mail to my Mac for perm-
anent record or to paste into a Mac doc, (or if Joe Shmoe sends me
a binhexxed file as email), I've got to mail it to myself, suspend
the mail (so it appears on the IBM-VM's "desktop" as AHUNTER MAIL)
and only then can I download it. I'm not so familiar with existing
email-using software but I would enjoy ordinary pull-down menus with
simple Save (to IBM virtual disk) and Download (to Mac via modem)
commands as well as Cut and Paste that work right. Hell, plain old
text wrap that cuts off between words and starts over next line instead of
ju
st
...yeah, instead of doing that when you keep typing...that's what I
want.
Other individual complaints more numerous to mention and embarrassing
as well (like only recently did I discover the secret trick of
"cd .." to go back up one level in the file hierarchy when moseying
around via ftp at sumex or wherever), and I'm sure each prob has its
own work-around solution, but is there perhaps a nice elegant soft-
ware solution that will let me stare at a Mac-like screen with Mac-
like interface while passing on the horribly opaque stuff to the com-
puters I'm linked up to? Like Fetch, that is, but for modem-based
connections?
There's gotta be something better than Kermit for this work.

I got married in September; my wife is in California--I'm still working to
move out of Michigan. So I'm not diddling the way I want to diddle, and can
solve the intractable problems Al mentions. Here's some advice.
Why do you have problems with huge files over the net that you don't have
with small files? Well, there are lots of reasons. The size of the file
increases the chance of transmission error somewhere along the way; there
are freezes and temporary outages on some systems/networks that will kill a
multi-hour transmission; there are user size limits on mail or disk space
or file size or memory allotted to a download (some systems keep everything
in memory, storing everything to disk only at the end of the transmission,
idiotic though that is). There are reasons that only God knows, and she
hasn't told me them yet.
Here's one solution that's both easy and cheap. You have problems with
large files? Make 'em small files. Use programs like Disk Doubler or
Stuffit Deluxe or just about any backup program or word processor to split
that .hqx file into manageable segments, and transmit them separately and
piece them back together at the other end in the Mac of choice. It's just a
text file, folks. There are programs at Sumex to make splitting and
recombining easy, I'd recommend
info-mac/cmp/binhqx-102.hqx
for the job. You can set the size of the segments you wish, and it will
take any binary file, convert it to .hqx, split it into segments, and
recombine segments on command. And the shareware fee is just $5.
God will help you win the lottery, Al. But she does request that you buy a
ticket!

I have NFSS2 (new font selection scheme version 2) set up on my Mac, and it
allows you to very easily select any of the standard postscript (or
TrueType) fonts as the default Roman, Sans Serif and Typewriter fonts. The
only problem is with the font used for mathematics, which is still cmmi.
There are commercial fonts available which will replace cmmi (MathTime, for
Times, and one for Lucida, both from Y&Y). I'll get one or both of these
one day, but for now, I think the the Computer Modern fonts are just fine
(although some of the ligatures could do with a bit more fine tuning...).
Previewing looks like it's not a problem with the latest OzTeX.

In my previous note about a SpeedyFinder like shareware, I made an error about
about the file types:
It should have read-
System 7 Pack consists of an Application, and a Control Panel. Sorry for any
confusion the previous error caused.
